Best Solar Pool Covers Reviews

In the hot summer days, nothing can compare to going for a swim in the pool. You get to cool yourself down, have fun, and exercise at the same time. However, even when it’s hot outside, a pool that has waterwhich is too cold can take the fun out of the whole thing. Usually, the water is warm when the temperature outside allows it, but there are times when that rule does not apply. For example, it has been raining for a few days, or maybe you have just changed the water in the pool. That doesn’t mean you have to avoid it.

There are various methods or warming the water in the pool. Some are more affordable than others. For example, heating the water using an electric heater can really add up to your electric bill. So what alternative do you have? A solar pool cover. You only have to make the initial investment, and you are done.

What is a solar pool cover?

If you haven’t seen one before, or if you have never heard of it, a solar pool cover is some sort of pool blanket. It is also known as a solar blanket or summer cover. Basically, it’s a lightweight cover that you put over your swimming pool. As a result, the water reaches a warm temperature. It looks like a huge piece of bubble wrap that not only will warm the water in the pool but will also keep everything out (like leaves, dust, etc.)

How does a solar pool cover work?

The whole principle is very simple. The purpose of a solar pool cover is to trap the heat gained from the sun. During the day, the air is hot, so the water in the pool gets warm. However, during the night or when it’s raining, all that heat goes away. But if you buy a solar pool cover, that will not happen. The cover will trap the heat underneath and keep it there for as long as possible.

The benefits of using a solar pool cover

When the solar pool cover was released, it was a hit. A lot of people saw the benefits and decided that such a product is a smart investment. And it really is. You only have to spend money once depending on the surface area of your pool, and then just enjoy the warm water. Here are the most appreciated advantages of a solar pool cover.

  • ü Small investment – if you have ever had a pool that was heated with the help of electricity, then you know the costs better than anyone. It takes a tremendous amount of power to heat so many cubic feet of water. But a solar pool cover is cheap, so you will save a lot of money. All you have to do is buy the blanket and place it over your pool. Of course, you may want to purchase a reel as well, just for the practicality of it, but you still spend less money than heating the water in the pool with electricity.
  • ü It’s easy to handle – a solar pool cover is nothing more than a large plastic cover. As I mentioned before, it’s just a big piece of bubble wrap, so how can heavy can it be? It’s very easy to take it out and put it over the water, and putting it away is just as easy. Some people prefer to buy a reel that gathers the cover, but it’ not a must. It’s true that the reel will preserve the blanket, but if you are careful handling it, there will be no damage. However, if you have an enormous pool, a reel may come in handy.
  • ü It prevents evaporation – you may not know this, but evaporation is the largest cause of heat loss when it comes to swimming pools. Heat is energy, and energy never sits still. Itiseither coming or going. There is always a transfer of energy between elements, and a swimming pool makes no exception. When the air is hot, and the water is cold, there is a transfer of heat and the other way around. But a solar pool cover will prevent evaporation from happening, which is a very smart way of saving energy.
  • ü It keeps your pool clean – as a bonus, the solar blanket will keep the debris out of the water. There will be no more leaves, dust particles, or whatever else falls in the pool while it’s uncovered. You’ll have warm and clean water at all times.

Tips on installing a solar pool cover

Installing a solar pool cover is not difficult. Quite the contrary actually. However, it’s very easy to go wrong with the whole process. The only time you can fail at doing it is in the beginning. So make sure that you read the instructions carefully.

  • ü Cut the solar blanket to fit your pool – the edges of the cover must not be outside the water. You must cut the cover to fit the pool perfectly. Well, not perfectly, but as long as it’s entirely inside the pool,it’s okay.
  • ü Use one even when the pool is heatedby electricity or gas – that will have a say as far as your bills are concerned. You may spend some power or gas on heating the pool, but that doesn’t mean you have to let all that energy slip away. A solar pool cover will maintain the temperature of the water for a longer period of time.

How to choose the best solar pool cover

Choosing a solar pool cover should not be random. There are a few things you need to consider before making a purchase. A solar blanket has little chances to be low-quality. It’s just a piece of plastic, after all. But there are a few aspects that you should pay attention to.

The first step would be to measure your pool. That is unless you already know the measurements. The covers are available in different sizes. Always pick a bigger size than the one of your pool. You can cut, but you cannot add.

Make sure that the solar blanket you choose has a light color. It’s true that a dark color may look better over your pool, but the lighter the color, the more the sun rays will be able to penetrate the plastic. And don’t you think that the bubbles are there for nothing. They are meant to separate the surface of the water from the plastic. That small space is where the heat builds up the most.

Last, but not least, always go for a solar blanket that has reinforced UV-stabilized polyethylene. It will last for longer, and damage will not occur anytime soon.

Reviews are the best way to tell whether a product is as advertised or not. If you still cannot find some solar pool covers that suit your needs, here are a few suggestions that may be of help.

Blue Wave Rectangular Solar Blanket

The Blue Wave solar pool cover is available in sizes from 12 x 24 feet to 30 x 50 feet. Just make sure that you buy one that is bigger than your actual pool’s surface area. Chances are that you have to cut the edges. That is if your pool doesn’t have the exact measurements as the cover.

The cover is transparent, but that will allow the sun’s ray to penetrate the surface of the blanket. The more sun is captured, the more heat will the cover retain. The thousands of heat-retaining thermal bubbles will contribute to the heating process and will block the heat from going anywhere. That way you don’t even need to heat the pool before covering it. The sun and the solar pool cover will do that on their own.

The solar blanket from Blue Wave is made of thick 14-gauge material. It is durable but lightweight and easy to handle. You can roll it on a reel, or you can simply fold it and put it away. It will help raise the water’s temperature with up to 15 degrees and will keep debris out of the water. Click here to read more reviews and buy on Amazon.

The thing about solar pool covers is that there aren’t a lot of differences between them. They are all pretty much the same. The colors differ, the number of bubbles maybe, and the thickness of the material. Other than that, there isn’t much to say that it’s different.

The Harris solar cover is available for pools that have a surface from 12 x 24 feet to 20 x 40 feet. It does a fantastic job at retaining heat. It’s not very expensive, and it’s definitely cheaper than using an electric or gas heater. The temperature of the water can increase with 15 degrees on a sunny day. The sun’s rays will penetrate the surface of the cover and will heat the water very fast. The water will be warm enough by noon.

The solar cover is easy to handle and install. You can fold it and unfold it by hand if you want, but you can also use a reel. It is lightweight, so you won’t struggle either way. It will prevent all the debris from entering the pool, the water will not evaporate, and the chemicals in the pool (like chlorine) will not dissipate. My recommendation

As I said, there aren’t many differences between solar pool covers. They are all designed for the exact same thing. Of course, the quality may differ. There were cases when the buyers received pool blankets with the bubbles burst. If I had to choose and recommend one of the three products I mentioned above, I would go with the Sun2Solar Rectangle Blue Swimming Pool Solar Cover. It is available in more sizes than the other two, and from what I hear, it’s one of the best solar pool covers available.

I assume that everybody loves swimming. I love it too. However, even if it’s hot outside, I don’t want the water to be too cold. A solar pool cover will do precisely that. It will heat the water to a comfortable temperature so you can enjoy a refreshing summer afternoon. Click here to buy on Amazon
